The Art and Science of Interior Design

The accuracy of science and the expressiveness of art are both present in interior design. We engage in a creative process as we design environments with the intention of evoking particular ideas or feelings. This is comparable to the creative process of a painter who starts with an idea, develops it into a full concept, and finally displays a magnificent work of art on canvas.

The steps in interior design are very similar to those in painting. However, interior design does not adhere to strict rules, just like painting. Although it is essential, utility isn’t the only factor in determining how appealing a room is. The distinction between a “beautiful” place and a “ordinary” one is primarily subjective, but a space should efficiently serve its purpose. It depends on the individual; what resonates with one person might not with another.

However, one of interior design’s appeals is that it is subjective. It’s a place where uniqueness flourishes. Each area can be completely unique, allowing us to embrace our actual selves and design living spaces that are in line with our preferences. The ability of interior design to recognize individuality gives us the ability to authentically embody who we are. We create a tapestry that reflects each person’s unique individuality with each design.

Designing interiors using science

Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that interior design also embraces its scientific components. The foundations of some elements are found in mathematics. These elements have the potential to be incredibly intricate. Consider issues like room proportions, geometry, and color harmony; these call for minute accuracy. Trying to navigate these complexities without understanding the fundamental concepts can prove challenging when aiming to manifest the desired ambiance within a space.

Yes, there are rules and regulations for interior design. But following them for the sake of compliance goes against the fundamental principles of real design. Instead, they act as aids for navigation that direct us to the intended location. They serve as means to an end, forming the course that will lead to the desired result.

Think of geometry as an example. A room filled entirely with squared-off, right-angled pieces might give off a harsh, excessively edgy vibe. Similar to how scale and space planning interact, how furniture fits into a specific place has importance. To ensure proportionality in the room design, measuring the proper height, width, and depth of furniture and drapes is essential. The “scientific” underpinning of the process, these fundamental factors form the cornerstone of room design.

Lighting is also evidence of this interaction. There are times when a room’s colors seem overly “cool.” However, a small change, like switching CFL bulbs for incandescent ones or choosing GE Reveal bulbs that illuminate the room, can completely affect how we perceive the color temperature there. It serves as an example of how subtle scientific considerations, such as lighting options, may significantly affect the style of furniture and décor in a space.

A Basis for Science. The Fine Art’s Final Touch.

These factors serve as the underlying, objective, and scientific principles of design. In order to get the desired result, it is crucial to have a thorough understanding of these fundamentals. Beyond this, though, design has a more personal tone and transforms into art. This distinction is essential and merits attention.

Who ultimately have greater artistic ability? Is it a Picasso or a Rembrandt? A da Vinci or a Monet? Design celebrates a relationship with beauty. Artisanship and beauty blend together beautifully. However, artistic expression is a matter of individual viewpoint. It’s a field where competing viewpoints thrive.

The fact that design depends on beauty that is subjective to the beholder’s view is what makes it so alluring. The extraordinary quality of our innate subjectivity allows us to express our unique personalities and individualism. Design becomes the canvas for our own expression, where each stroke contains the essence of our uniqueness, much to how brushstrokes on a canvas weave a narrative particular to each artist.
